German chamomile is a member of the aster and sunflower family that people have used for centuries. It is probably best known as a tea to calm an upset stomach or to help with sleep. It is also reputed to help reduce inflammation, regulate diabetes (Journal Of Agriculture & Food Chemistry-study Sept 2008) and to lower cholesterol and the risk of cancer (Pytotherapy Research- report July 2006).
To Brew Chamomile Tea:
Add 1-2 teaspoons of dried Chamomile per cup to hot water (not boiling- let kettle sit a couple of minutes after boiling). Steep for 5-10 minutes and then enjoy. A little honey can be added. In warmer months the tea is also great chilled.
To use in a Facial Steam:
Use a large bowl or pot, add 1-2" of boiling water and add 2 Tablespoons of Chamomile Flowers. Cover the bowl/put a lid on the pot of a couple of minutes. Then put your face over the steaming bowl and cover your head with a large towel to keep the steam in. Steam for about 5 minutes. Steam is often used in spas as part of a facial treatment. Facial steams are touted for their ability to open pores, soften skin and improve circulation.
BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT WATER AND HOT STEAM.
Chamomile Tea is considered safe for the whole family (babies over 6mths) and for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Not recommended for Asthmatics or those with bleeding disorders or on blood thinning medication or anyone with allergies to Chrysanthemums, Daisies, Marigolds, Ragweed or Aster.
